Sean Massung

I am a researcher in text mining, natural language processing, and machine learning. I received a PhD in computer science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Spring 2017. My advisor was Professor ChengXiang Zhai, and I was a member of the Text Information Management and Analysis Group. My thesis focuses on text representation, determining ways to extract meaningful features from text data for use in downstream tasks such as classification, summarization, and search.

Beginning in Summer 2017, I'm a quantitative researcher at Jump Trading in Chicago. During an internship in grad school, I also worked at Narrative Science on their natural language generation platform.

I am a co-owner of MeTA, a modern data sciences toolkit. I also wrote a textbook on text data management and analysis with my advisor.
